Russia cannot fit Japanese premier visit into Putin's schedule

The Japanese government has decided to postpone indefinitely an official visit to Russia by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. ITAR-TASS learnt today from the Japanese Foreign Ministry that instead of visiting Russia, Koizumi now plans to have a bilateral meeting with Vladimir Putin at the G8 summit in St Petersburg this summer [mid-July].

Earlier on the Russian side said that Koizumi's visit does not fit into the Russian president's working schedule. Kyodo news agency said the Japanese government might have taken this decision because of Moscow's tough stance on the issue of Kuril Islands.
