NewsRussia to hold 64 international functions in 2006 – Russian sherpaApril 12 – The July 2006 summit of the G8 in St. Petersburg is the most important event of Russia’s G8 Presidency out of a total of 64 official international meetings, conferences and other functions, Igor Shuvalov, presidential aide and Russian G8 sherpa, told journalists in Washington. He said finance and energy ministers had held meetings in Moscow and ministers of healthcare, education and foreign affairs would hold three separate conferences before the July summit. Shuvalov mentioned the Civil G8 International NGO Forum and reminded journalists about the key issues on the agenda of Russia’s G8 Presidency – energy security, education and infectious diseases. The presidential aide said the drafting of documents for the summit was proceeding in compliance with the timetable. He also said that the St. Petersburg authorities were preparing for the summit and that the official press center of the summit would be sufficient for several thousand journalists, taking into account the world’s media interest in the event. Before arriving in Washington, the Russian G8 sherpa has visited Canada and from the United States he will fly to Japan and Europe. In compliance with the group’s tradition, the G8 sherpas will hold their own meeting before the July summit and it will take place in Russia. The G8 summit is scheduled in St. Petersburg for July 15-17, 2006. |
