NewsIntl experts to discuss ways to combat infectious diseases in MoscowMOSCOW. April 23 (Interfax) - Moscow will host an international conference on ways to combat infectious diseases on April 25 and 26, under the preparations for the G8's July summit. "Recommendations to be proposed will be entered on the agenda of meetings between the G8 leaders' aides and will be taken into account while drafting the final documents of the 2006 summit," organizers of the conference told Interfax. The conference will discuss the "old" and "new" infectious diseases reported globally, and ways to combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, poliomyelitis and malaria, which were given priority attention at the previous summits. Political, financial and organizational aspects of the G8's previous initiatives will also be addressed. The conference is expected to propose ways of enhancing global efforts to combat infectious diseases, that could be considered during Russia's presidency of the G8. "The conference will give leading experts and research centers a rare chance to discus and coordinate efforts to fight infectious diseases ahead of the G8 summit in St.Petersburg," organizers said. The main reports will be presented by officials with Russia's Consumer Rights and Welfare Oversight Service (Rospotrebnadzor) and the finance and foreign ministries, the World Health Organization, the World Bank, UNAIDS and other UN agencies, leading experts from G* countries, and representatives of Russian and international nongovernmental organizations. sd |
