Infectious diseases: what does it mean?

A.Erovichenkov. Infectious Diseases

The pathogens of the infectious diseases – prions, viruses, bacterium, protozoa, hemonth – are the most ancient forms of life in the Earth. The descriptions of many infectious diseases and clinical illnesses are made by the specialists during the antiquity period of history,
During his/her live human beings contact with dozens of thousands of various microorganisms, a part of which present a normal flora of human organism, participates in the process of digestion, from another hand – colonizes human coverlet, mucous tunic, protect the human organism from pathogenic microorganisms. One cell of human organism accounts ten and more different microorganisms. At the sane time during the contact of a human with pathogenic microorganisms some infectious diseases are being developed.
The processes or mechanisms of the interaction of a human and microorganisms can be divided into symbiosis (profitable for both), commensalisms (with no detriment to each other) and parasitism (the progress of an infectious disease).

Nowadays, according to the WHO statistics, the infectious diseases are the cause for 25% of mortality along with cardiovascular and oncological diseases. During some last period the aetiology of many infectious diseases is decoded, such as NIV infection, virus hepatitis C,E etc. At that we have to do much to research a role of infectious pathogens in the progress of many bodily diseases.

During the last period of time the role of some dartrous viruses, papilo-viruses , heminth, schistosomiasis, opisthorchosis for the progress of a whole range of oncological diseases is determined. Now the scientific research tries to understand the role of participation of viruses, bacterium and protozoa in the progress of many chronic diseases of gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system, lungs, kidneys and other human organs.

So, to solve the most important problem of the today’s medical science – prophylaxis of chronic diseases – we need more detailed and deep research of the pathogenic basis of interaction of the pathogen microorganisms and a human. Very often inadequate treatment of an ordinary infection can lead to the very serious consequences - impetiginous illness, chronic glomerulonephritis, acute pharyngitis and acute rheumatic fever etc.).

One more fact is very important to understand the problem: of all the spectrum of microorganisms that can be potentially dangerous for a human, some dozens can be used as a biological weapon. In this connection it is extremely important for all physicians to have deep knowledge about clinical forms of infectious diseases, necessary measures to treat them, to prevent their dissemination.

One more very serious problem of all the world community is the progress and dissemination of such diseases as HIV infection, chronic virus hepatitis, which are considered as socially important infectious diseases and can depend on the dissemination of prostitution, drug abuse etc.
In this connection, along with the specific counteraction to the negative social events, such as drug abuse, prostitution etc., the role of the Mass Media in the dissemination of knowledge about infectious diseases is very important.
We must protect our society from the unequal advertising of medicines provided to treat infectious diseases – their advertising in Mass Media is prohibited already in many civilized countries.

Many infectious diseases are the index of the poor economic situation in this or that country, of the natural disasters, such as tsunami, earthquake, or armed conflicts.
A very important task of the international community is to help these countries to liquidate the outbreaks of the infectious diseases.

One more important thing is the national and international cooperation of the scientific and practical knowledge about infectious pathology. We have no special research center in Russia which could unit the research in this sphere and give useful recommendations on further scientific research, to determine most important prospects of these research. That could finally lead to the improvement of the practical help to the population in the treatment of infectious diseases.

The further development of the international cooperation of knowledge and exchange of practical experience in fighting infectious diseases, preparing specialists able to fight these diseases must be considered as the today’s priorities.

Alexander A. Erovichenkov, Doctor of Medicine, Professor of the infectious diseases department of the Moscow Sechenov Academy.
