Russia to present new anti-HIV vaccine centre at G8 summit

ST. PETERSBURG, May 22 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia will present a concept for a HIV/AIDS research centre at the G8 summit in St. Petersburg this summer.
The centre will be created to develop an innovative vaccine against HIV and prevent an AIDS epidemic, Professor Andrei Kozlov, the head of St. Petersburg’s Biomedical Centre, said on Monday.
Koslov is also the chairman of the 15th international conference “AIDS, Cancer and Public Health” that is now in underway in St. Petersburg. It has brought together officials from leading Russian and foreign research centres as well as business people and representatives from public organisations.
According to Kozlov, it will cost more than one billion roubles to create the centre. Funding will be provided from the federal and local budgets as well as Russian and international charitable organisations and private donators.
The main founders are St. Petersburg State University, the Institute of Ultra Pure Biopreparations, and the Biomedical Centre.
Fundamental research has been conducted since 1997 together with relevant institutes in Moscow and Novosibirsk, as well as national centers in the United States.
“Samples of anti-HIV vaccine created in St. Petersburg by using bioengineering and biotechnology have been clinically tested,” Kozlov said.
