NGO Press Briefing: Africa

ActionAid, Christian Aid, DATA, Oxfam and Save the Children collectively expressed concern over the lack of focus on fulfilling the Gleneagles commitments on African poverty relief.

At a joint press conference held on Sunday 16 July 2006, representatives from the five NGOs emphasized that, with African aid a subordinate issue to that of Energy Security, Global Health and Education, the G8 leaders are in serious risk of missing their commitments made at last years Gleneagles summit. According to OXFAM spokesperson Irungu Houghton, “Africa and poverty are not take-it-or-leave-it issues. They must be at the top of the G8 agenda in Germany in 2007 and every year until we make poverty history.”

Joining Houghton were Moussa Faye from ActionAid, Matt Phillips from Save the Children, Claire Melamed from Christian Aid, and Oliver Buston from DATA. Following their briefing the five representatives answered questions from the assembled press.
